How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome
Throughout my career, I’ve always struggled with imposter syndrome whenever I start something new. I have been lucky that it’s not something that debilitates me, but a little bit of self-doubt is always there.
It’s taken 30 years to become an expert at what I do. You can ask me anything about fine art printing or Adobe Photoshop and I have no problems talking about them. However, getting me to write a blog post for artists about relevant topics and issues, it’s been challenging to say the least. Writing was never my strong suit, so I’m not really surprised. 🤔
Unmasking the internal struggles of artists
Do you worry that you’re not a “real” artist, and that someday everyone will find out? If so, you’re not alone, this is a problem that I see and hear a lot. Imposter syndrome is a common experience among artists, particularly those who are just starting out or trying to break into the industry.
What is imposter syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon characterized by feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy, despite evidence to the contrary. It’s the sense that you’re not good enough, that your achievements are due to luck or external factors, and that someday you’ll be exposed as a fraud.
Imposter syndrome is particularly common among artists, who are often their own worst critics. It can manifest in a variety of ways, from feelings of insecurity and anxiety to a reluctance to share your work or pursue new opportunities.
Strategies for overcoming imposter syndrome
While imposter syndrome can be challenging to overcome, there are several strategies that can help. Here are some tips to help you manage self-doubt and build confidence as an artist:
Recognize your accomplishments 🏆
Take time to reflect on your achievements and acknowledge your successes. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may seem. Write them down and revisit them when you’re feeling self-doubt.
Practice self-compassion ❤️🩹
Be kind to yourself, and remember that it’s okay to make mistakes or experience setbacks. Treat yourself as you would treat a friend, with compassion and understanding.
Surround yourself with supportive people
Connect with other artists who can offer encouragement, feedback, and support. Join online communities or attend local art events to meet other artists and build your network.
Embrace vulnerability 👌🏻
Recognize that vulnerability is a natural part of the creative process. Embrace the uncertainty and take risks with your work. Allow yourself to be imperfect and learn from your mistakes.
Set realistic goals 🎯
Set achievable goals for yourself, and break them down into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrate your progress along the way, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t achieve everything you set out to do.
Keep learning and growing 📚
Continue to educate yourself and develop your skills as an artist. Take classes, attend workshops, and seek out opportunities to learn from other artists. Remember that growth and progress take time.
Trust in your abilities
In the journey of being an artist, imposter syndrome can be a challenging hurdle to overcome. The doubts, insecurities, and fears can often cloud our creative path. However, it’s important to remember that these feelings are not uncommon and that many artists have faced or are facing similar struggles.
By recognizing that imposter syndrome is a shared experience among artists, we can find solace in knowing that we are not alone in our self-doubt. This awareness allows us to seek support, guidance, and inspiration from others who have walked a similar path.
While imposter syndrome may never completely disappear, we can learn to manage and overcome it. We can build resilience and confidence over time.
Remember, you have unique talents, perspectives, and creative visions to share with the world. Trust in your abilities and embrace the artistic journey with courage and perseverance. Embrace the support of a community and lean on the wisdom and experiences of fellow artists. Together, we can navigate the challenges and realize our full artistic potential. Your artistic dreams are within reach, and the world is waiting to experience the beauty you have to offer.
